what's happened to me?!!

The day before our wedding during a rehearsal dinner game Mike was asked what his favorite characteristic of mine was. And I was meant to guess his answer. I hadn't a clue ... like many of the other answers, really ... my height? my hair? ... "Um, I don't know ... my eyes?" ... I know ... LAME! ... especially since my eyes are probably my least striking feature.

"No, silly. I told you the other day what it was."

I had another think ... nup, nothing.

"Your skin! Your beautiful smooth flawless skin."

ohhhhh ...

Red flags went up ... "Um, you know that my skin won't always be like this ... I'm certain wrinkles will come along."

"Oh, sweetheart. I know that. I love you no matter what your skin is like."

Hmph ... wrinkles ... I knew those would come ... but I definitely was NOT prepared for the onslaught of acne.

Ugh! It's rabid! I'd never had it this bad. Sure, an occasional zit here or there ... but never massive clumps of painful red irritation.

I had a good cry about it last night ... especially since I'd gone to the shop for the weeks shopping and had run into FIVE people I knew. I'd ventured out of the house ... not feeling particularly well yesterday anyway ... without any make-up to cover my blotchiness. It was very humbling ... five people I knew ... one, a minister at a nearby Presbyterian church stopped and had a chat with me in the checkout line ... saw me in my humbling state. But it wasn't just the encounters that brought on the tears, it seems to be out of my control. Mike loved my smooth skin and I could do nothing to bring it back.

I've looked at skin complexion diets and what I eat on a daily basis definitely lines up with everything. Is it my latex pillow? Is it ... gasp ... Mike ... oh, no! I'm allergic to Mike!

Possibly it's a reaction to the Pill. I've known that to happen for a number of women.

Christine, you're beautiful, and pimples won't take that away! I'm sorry if me videoing your face tonight dented your self esteem - your skin is fine for having "acne", you look great!

yup, craig ... except ... no pill

eh, don't worry about my self-esteem, Shy ... consider it a sanctifying experience. My mum reminded me that everything is under God's control.

I always thought when I reached my mid-20s, I wouldn't have to worry about pimples. Now I've spent literally half my life stressing over bad skin. Not cool, hormones! Lets get over this!

You just have to wash your face with soap 4 times a day, from my experience.

I thought soap was bad for skin

Wow - this is the first time you've had to deal with acne??? I've been dealing with it on and off since early high school, but a good bit of it is due to my skin condition, a condition that's never going to go away. All I can do is use the best products I can fine, and as mentioned, eat as best I can and drink lots of water. Even still, some of it will never go away (at least not for awhile due to the nature of my skin).

I am a big fan of Proactiv, and you can look it up and order it online if you're interested~

I could respond to this at length and bring out my first year chemistry and stuff. Scratching your face with your fingernails then washing it with metholated spirits does work in preventing acne. I would surgest something milder.

Clearasil Medicated Wipes work the best. Similar to my surgestion above, but they contain ethonal. (highly flammable).

Your face is left tight and dry, but clean.

If you think soap is bad for your skin, ethonal is potentially lethal. But it's great.

The alternative is to use a mild surfactant, but wash more regularly.

Oh, that's SO frustrating! I hate it when that happens to me... it makes me feel 13 years old all over again. It happens almost every time I move or travel - either a reaction to climatic change or to the differences in local water treatment methods, I'm not sure which. But I've found that trying my best not to touch it, using the discount version of Clearasil's cream face wash in the tube every day in the shower, and using 70% rubbing alcohol as an astringent work pretty well. I put oil-free moisturizer where I need it, but I use the alcohol to dry up the blemishes. (I know it sounds harsh, but as long as you confine it to the areas that need it, it doesn't overdry your skin.)

I'm also hopelessly vain, so I usually make futile efforts to cover it with makeup. That, of course, does nothing to encourage healing... so kudos to you for going out with no makeup and being brave! :)

It seems like you've gotten the gamut of amateur dermatological advice from all of us - I'd love to know what works!

Hi Stine,

I agree with Catherine. It could be the climate or the water. After eight months in fla. my skin decided to break out in, not acne, but in very dry, dark spots around my neck — they looked like bruises! I freaked and thought my soft skin and complextion was gone forever!

After a recent trip up north for my vacation and the use of cream and dry skin lotion, I don't get those awful break outs anymore. In fact it cleared up during my vacation, so it may be a climate thing. But my skin is now very sensative being back in fla. I may be allergic to my apt., work or just fla. in general. hmm.

Anyway, when I was asking a few people about it, some of them didn't really seem to notice my condition, which seemed so apparent in my eyes. So, even though your case may be very frustrating, it probably doesn't look that way to others. But I agree with you, skin problems can be a VERY humbling experience.

Oh Christine! That is hard! Perhaps you'd find it comforting to talk to another friend of mine whose name begins with C (oh, the last letter is a) who has struggled with this for quite a while!

I second gloryandgrace's recommendation of Proactiv. Works quickly and thoroughly!

Have you changed detergent? That happened to me once when I used a new detergent to wash my clothes.
